A few days ago Gypsyhawk had to announce on their Facebook page that they had to cancel the remaining dates on their tour. It was effective after tonight’s (6-29-2014) show. There were 11 dates in total being cancelled. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the original post so I couldn’t quote it. Shortly after the bad news hit, the band posted the following to their Facebook page: Continue reading
It’s weird how when you hear about someone’s passing that oftentimes it makes you think about the important people in your life. Yesterday I learned of the passing of a man known as Riez Stoner. You may or may not know him but since you’re reading this, he has impacted your life unknowingly.
I’m not going to lie and tell you he was my best friend. In all honestly, I never met the man and given geographical locations, I likely never would have. Through technology, the internet has brought together many people of every race, religion and creed. Through social media platforms, we have taken the old fashioned pen pal formula and put a modern spin on it. Having the ability to communicate with people throughout the world with a click of a button has opened up and begun many friendships. It is through these platforms that I had my first interaction with Riez. It was through his blog as well as the old Sludge Swamp that I first got to know him. Later it was through Facebook chats as well as his posts he would make. We chatted briefly a few times. Riez was a music fan who loved all types of stoner rock music. He had a knack for finding a ton of new and cool music. A lot of those findings I would later pass on to those that follow what I do. Riez wasn’t the main reason I do what I do but he was a contributing factor.
One more thing before I sign off, take the time to tell those close to you how you feel about them. That friend or family member you keep telling yourself to call, stop telling and do it. Hug your loved ones a little bit tighter, and tell them you love them. Those friends that you’re close to, tell them how much you appreciate them.
Brother Riez, wherever you are, you’ve had a big influence on me, for that I thank you. May you rest in peace.
BLACK MOTH – NEW ALBUM ‘CONDEMNED TO HOPE’ RELEASED 15th SEPTEMBER
An onslaught of monumental riff sorcery and serpentine grace, Black Moth rose from the Leeds underground scene at the end of the last decade, indulging their love for both Sabbath sulphur and Stooges squalor. Their debut ‘The Killing Jar’, which was released in 2011, effortlessly transcended its influences to arrive at a nefarious and turbulent brew, equal parts horror movie atmosphere, thunderous drive and maverick spark, with Harriet Bevan’s biting and beguiling voice leading the charge.
“Bonze’s Fuel are a heavy blues rock band hailing from Athens, Greece.” It has a distinct 70’s hard rock sound. Pretty damn impressive. Continue reading
UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS Announce
First North American Tour
|UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS, one of the most talked about rock bands currently in existence, and an enigma in the international underground scene, released their third album Mind Control last year via Metal Blade Records/ Rise Above Records in North America. The reviews were phenomenal and UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS began to take North America by storm. The band recently concluded a highly successful tour of Europe and the UK as well as sold out dates in New Zealand and Australia.
In support of Mind Control, UNCLE ACID played North America for the first time this May as part of the Maryland Deathfest. After the amazing reception and breathtaking performance, UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS are set to return to North America this fall for a full North American tour. The tour kicks off September 24th in Philadelphia, PA and runs through October 11th in Los Angeles, CA. Danava will provide support on the tour and tickets go on sale this Friday June 27th.
UNCLE ACID commented on the upcoming tour:
“Deadbeats of North America! We’re very pleased to announce our first tour of the U.S. and Canada. It’s been a long time coming but we’re looking forward to finally destroying your minds!”
Mind Control is a concept album with a theme that makes the acts and intentions of the likes of Charles Manson and Jim Jones seem like petty crimes. What makes Mind Control scarier than most albums is that it doesn’t seem as sinister on the surface as it really is deep down, within the core of its black acid-drenched world of pain and torture.
Imagine the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges, whilst sitting on murder charges and you may get a glimpse into their fuzzed up world of exploding tube amps and cymbal smashing mayhem. However, this enticing act of musical manipulation is merely the icing upon a very sick cake.
Recorded at the legendary Chapel Studios over an autumnal full moon using the finest western electrical technology, engineer Jim Spencer (Bert Jansch, Robert Wyatt) has captured perfectly the bands live sound of saturated fuzz, mind-bending riffs and 60’s vocal harmonies.

THE CUTTHROATS 9: New Album From Unsane Offshoot Now Available On All Formats
Following its LP release via Lamb Unlimited earlier in the month, the CD version of Dissent — the highly anticipated new album from THE CUTTHROATS 9, the band formed by Unsane guitarist/vocalist Chris Spencer — is out this week via Reptilian Records.
Following a decade-long hiatus from live shows and recording music, San Francisco noise rock kingpins THE CUTTHROATS 9 have fully re-infiltrated the scene on all fronts in 2014, having toured the West Coast with Black Cobra in recent weeks preceding the release of Dissent, with further tour plans currently in the developing stages. The first recordings from the band to see release since the turn of the millennium, Dissent blends organic harmonics into a bed of foundation-crumbling low-end swagger and massive amplification, bringing THE CUTTHROATS 9 back into the mix in massive style with seven new tracks. Chris Spencer’s (Unsane, Celan) signature vocals and riffage are here delivered in an even more restrained fashion with a slightly more “Western” vibe, yet tormented aggression still lies within each slick track, fueled by bassist Tony Baumeister (-16-, Aeges) and the percussion of returning drummer Will Carroll (Old Granddad, Death Angel). Dissent was recorded and mixed at Louder Studios with producer Tim Green (Melvins, Bikini Kill, Dystopia, The Fucking Champs, Wolves In The Throne Room) where the band recorded their 2000-released self-titled debut LP, bringing everything full-circle fifteen years later.
Stream all of Dissent now at THIS LOCATION.
The Dissent CD is officially out tomorrow, June 24th, via longtime cohorts Reptilian Records, also responsible for the THE CUTTHROATS 9‘s early releases over a decade ago. The album is already available on 150-gram audiophile LP with download card included via Lamb Unlimited — the label spawned by Alan Schneider of No More Records and the band’s own Chris Spencer. Orders forDissent are available via Lamb Unlimited HERE and via Reptilian HERE.
Stay tuned for further tour announcements and more on the band in the coming weeks.
“…the trio has returned with a compelling new slab of swaggering low-end abuse and tactical distortion… a bassy, bluesy, almost plaintive slice of audible paranoia.” – Noisey
“…Dissent, takes the dissonant, minor-key approach to slide guitar and harmonica and incorporates it into a sound that’s absolutely punishing.” – East Bay Express
“While Unsane is focused on blood and gore, The Cutthroats 9 are focused on ugliness. The Western-inspired slide guitars and blues vibe, combined with the noisy bass lines and vile guitars, creates a dirty atmosphere that would be sinister if it weren’t so catchy. 8/10” – American Aftermath
“…this is the best CT9 record… There is a looseness here that doesn’t really shine through on the Unsane records, and the slide guitar sounds more like a slide through gravel. 8/10” – Decibel
“This band knows how to dip their riffs into a vat of emotional angst so that the listener will get where the band is coming from.” – Cvlt Nation
“There is no questioning who is running this ship, Spencer is front and centre with those distinctive tones both vocally and guitar wise. I think some Unsane fans dodge theses release because they somehow get a rap for being more bluesy than sludge. Those fans are fucking missing out.” – The Sludgelord
BRIMSTONE COVEN: Retro Rock/Doom Metal Sorcerers To Release Debut Via Metal Blade Records; Preview Track Posted
Retro rock/doom metal sorcerers, BRIMSTONE COVEN, will unleash the psychedelic rumblings of their self-titled full-length and inaugural release for Metal Blade Records.
Formed in Wheeling, West Virginia in 2011, BRIMSTONE COVEN churns a cogent blend of dark, smoky cult rock that echoes the eerie reverberations of hard rock icons such as Black Sabbath and Pentagram, mixed with the classic rock craftings of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, all the while preserving a vintage rock sound mixed with a style all their own. The outfit’s Metal Blade debut boasts seventeen mind-altering tracks of occult conjurings – a combo of their self-released full-length and EP — complete with new mastering and the vintage art renderings of Creighton Hill.
Described The Sludgelord of BRIMSTONE COVEN: “Coming across as Zeppelin meets ’70s Black Sabbath (the best kind), BRIMSTONE COVEN certainly have that vintage sound in spades, guitars are crisp, bass feels warm and drums played adeptly, with a looseness that only Messieurs Moon, Ward and Mitchell… are known for. Great stuff and what a voice; ‘Big John’ is quite the frontman with an endearing and rich tone… Killer.”
Brimstone Coven will be released in North America via Metal Blade Records on August 5th, 2014. In the meantime, zone out to the witchy, jam-wrangled goodness of fifth cut, “The Grave” at THIS LOCATION.
